Southern Concrete Services were appointed by SWH Build as the specialist subcontractor to undertake stone cleaning and repairs to Bournemouth Pavilion a Grade II listed Bournemouth landmark. Built in the 1920s, the popular seaside venue houses an active Art Deco theatre and ballroom along with cafes, bars and meeting rooms.
The works comprised the refurbishment and repairs to the south, west and east elevations. SCS used a variety of their employed, skilled tradesmen, to carry out concrete repairs, stone repairs, stone cleaning using a variety of cleaning poultices and TORIK high temperature, low pressure cleaning. The stonemason’s repointed the brickwork and cut stonework with NHLS lime mortar using traditional methods.
The reason for the defective stonework was found to be cracked and spalling concrete. These structural elements had to be repaired first. Care was taken in the repair process to ensure longevity, particularly due to the exposed coastal location. Whilst on site a section of the upper parapet was found to be deformed. This was carefully dismantled and rebuilt largely using the original material to comply with English Heritage guidelines.
