Littledown Leisure Centre

Southern Concrete Services were employed by Bournemouth Borough Council to undertake an investigation and subsequent repairs to the structural columns in the Littledown Leisure Centre plant room. Test results came back showing high chloride and sulphuric acid levels up to a depth of 75mm into the column.

SCS, working alongside a Structural Engineer, were presented with the challenge of propping the structural columns to carry out the necessary concrete repairs. With temperatures reaching 40 degrees, cooling systems were also required.

Mabey props and suitable needles were installed in and around the columns, working around important plant that couldn’t be removed due to the leisure centre remaining fully operational throughout the works.

100mm was removed from the whole perimeter of the columns exposing the reinforcement. Any corrosion was then removed from the reinforcement using abrasive mechanical means. BASF Nanocrete AP was applied to the reinforcement and the repairs were carried out using Nanocrete R4 fluid. The bases of the structural columns were increased in size by 50mm to provide additional cover.

The concrete repair system used was in full compliance with BS EN 1504.
